Week #1
Delaware North Arena was rockin’ on opening weekend as the inclement weather conditions did not slow down fierce competition.  Bareback Riding Arena Record holder Keith Johnson hit the dirt on Thursday, but came to life on Friday to team up with “Gizmo” for a winning score of 75 points.  While most rodeos are short on Bareback Riders, there is no shortage in Yellowstone – tough horses and good friends keep entries full every weekend.  However, it looks like it will be quite a feat to get a bucking bull rode in West Yellowstone this year because 31 of the 32 bull riders bucked off, including past champions Mark Phillips, Aubrey Smith, and Jason Corder.  All the glamour (and money) went to a rookie bull rider from Great Falls, MT – Jason Collins, who rode a hard spinning bull for 83 big ones!  The Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo goes every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in June, July, and August.  For more information, visit

Week 2
COMEBACK KING AUBREY SMITH RETURNS TO THE TOP!!  After a season-ending injury in 2008, the hometown hero rehabbed all winter to get back into bull riding shape.  It did not start well for him, however, as he hit the dirt 5 consecutive times heading into the Saturday night performance.  “I was really fighting my head after bucking off a bull that I should have ridden on Friday” Smith commented.  After some advice from long-time friend and WWYR producer Bo McMillan to “slide and ride”, Aubrey electrified the crowd with a 78 point score.  It was a pretty hefty paycheck for Smith as this was the second weekend in a row that only one bull rider made the 8-second welcome whistle through the entire three-day show.  The Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo goes every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in June, July, and August.  For more information, visit

PROFESSIONAL BAREBACK RIDER DALE STOLLER stormed the rodeo this weekend in West Yellowstone.  Scoring 86 and 84 points, the Great Falls, MT cowboy capitalized on the ability to ride more than one night enroute to winning 1st place and splitting second place with defending champion Matt Lodahl.  Stoller, a perennial qualifier for the Montana and National Circuit Finals Rodeos, was welcomed back to West Yellowstone as one of the fans’ favorite cowboys.   In the Barrel Racing, the fast horses and pretty ladies were smokin’ as local cowgirls Jill Georgio and Rusty Morgal both took home paychecks. The Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo goes every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in June, July, and August.  For more information, visit www.yellowstonerodeo.com or call (406) 560-6913.

Week #5 - Big Sky 4th of July Rodeo Results

WILD WEST PIZZERIA BULLFIGHTER MATT LODAHL is making a strong title defense in the Bareback year-end standings.  Scoring 79 and 76 points respectively on his rides this weekend in Big Sky, Matt has jumped out to an early lead for the buckle race.  West Yellowstone cowboy Keith Johnson is hot on his heels, though, and plans to battle for the crown all summer long.  The bucking horses were very strong this week and Thomas Nerlin was the only cowboy to get a qualified score as he prepares to head to the High School National Finals Rodeo.  Nerlin was 3rd place in last year’s standings, but has his eye set on the championship this year.  We are back in West Yellowstone this weekend as the Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo goes every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in June, July, and August.  For more information, visit www.yellowstonerodeo.com or call (406) 560-6913.

Week #6

86 POINT BULL RIDE highlights the show in West Yellowstone this weekend as Justin Munns teams up with "Horny Toad" for the highest marked ride of the season so far.  Local cowboy Keith Johnson drew bareback horse of the year "Crash Landing" and took advantage of it, winning the weekend's competition with an 81 point score.  Crash Landing had a remarkable trip, turning back hard to the right in a tight circle and kicking high over his head every jump.  "Crash only gets rodeo once or twice a year and it was amazing that Keith not only hung on, but was able to keep his feet in the neck", commented former champion Wes Saul.  Jill Georgio was able to increase her lead in the year-end barrel racing standings as she placed 2nd and 3rd in the three-day show.  The Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo goes every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in June, July, and August.  For more information, visit www.yellowstonerodeo.com or call (406) 560-6913.

Week #7

JILL GEORGIO SETS THE BARRELS ON FIRE this week as she was able to do what nobody has done in the last 1 ½ years – she beat defending champion Ashley Outzts.  Ouzts did still win the breakaway, but had to settle for 2nd in the barrels on her famous horse “Brown”.  Wild Wes Saul was busy as usual fighting bulls and entertaining the crowd, but also had an exceptional weekend in competition as he took first place honors in both the Bareback and the Saddle Bronc events.  The bulls are still bringing it hard as they seem to get buckier and meaner every weekend.  There was only one ride out of 36 again this weekend as Sydney, Montana cowboy Jordan Angus took home all the money.  The Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo goes every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in June, July, and August.  For more information, visit www.yellowstonerodeo.com or call (406) 560-6913.

Week #8

REIGHNING CHAMPION BULL RIDER MARK PHILLIPS climbs back to the top of the standings with a first place finish in the bull riding this weekend!  Mark was pretty excited as he arrived on Thursday night to learn that he had drawn Phase Shifter, a bull that he had won on before.  79 points later, he was sittin’ pretty as this win has vaulted him past Jason Collins into the #1 spot.  However, Bozeman’s Matt Paffhousen reminded everyone that this race is far from over as his 78 point score puts him into prime position to make a move as the Finals is starting to loom on the Horizon.  The Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo goes every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in June, July, and August.  For more information, visit www.yellowstonerodeo.com or call (406) 560-6913.

Week #9
Week #9 of the Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo Series proved once again that the bull riders are in hot pursuit of the year end buckle.  Beau Powers started things off with a bang in the Junior Bull Riding posting a score of 78.  Not only did this give the rest of the bull riders a challenge, it also brought newcomer Seth Pierce into the picture with a score of 82 and encouraged past champions Mark Phillips and Aubrey Smith to cowboy up and ride to scores of 75 and 73 respectively.  These placings by both past champions will definitely heat up the race for the year end buckle. With only four more weekends of rodeo action left the competition in all of the events was very competitive as some of the fastest times posted in the breakaway roping, team roping and barrel racing reflected this past weekend.

Week #10
Despite the fall-like temperatures for the weekend of August 6,7 & 8 the rodeo action was sizzling hot!  It appeared that the young men were going to take home all the cash in the Breakaway Roping as Jake Angell and Culley Morgan posted times of 2.97 and 3.84 respectively.  However, Ringling's Chennell Brewer proved that she could best the boys and won the Breakaway Roping with a 2.85.  Chennell also posted the fastest time of the weekend in the Barrel Race, with Rusti Morgal close at her heels, to take home top honors in that event as well.  Determination was evident in all the events as the Finals Rodeo and Year End Buckles are on the minds of all the contestants as the season comes down to the final three weekends.

Week 11
The race for the year end buckles for the Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo Series appears to be heading for a dramatic conclusion in numerous events.  Rusti Morgal is giving Jill Georgio litererally a run for her money as she tries to catch Jill's lead at the top of the standings in the barrel race.  Bobbe McMillan is gaining ground in pursuit of Leah Parsch's lead in the Breakaway Roping; and Doug Torgerson is working hard to regain his lead over fellow team roper Jerome Hutchison.  While the remaining events are not quite as hotly contested, all contestants have an eye on the year-end buckles.  With only two weeks of competiton remaining, all contestants are pursuing the buckles with solid determination.

Week 12
As the second to last weekend of the Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo series came to a close on Saturday August 22 many of the contestants will be anxiously awaiting the Finals on August 27, 28 & 29.  The Bull Riding is always an exciting event but even more so as past champion Mark Phillips posted a 77 point score to finish 2nd in the event closely followed by Matt Paffhausen with a 74 who is also challenging Mark for the year end buckle. Matt Lodahl, past Bareback Riding Champion and current leader, sidelined by an injury and uanable to ride Bareback horses observed closely as Wes Saul garnered 2 out of 3 placings in the Bareback Riding. Lodahl is hoping to be medically released to be able to compete in the event at the Finals in an effort to hold onto his lead in both the Bareback Riding and the All-Around race. The race for the year-end awards will be closely contested right up until the end of the final performance in almost all of the events with only a few points separating the leaders in each event and should make for  very exciting Finals performances!

Finals - Week 13
The season Finale of the Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo Series ended with three action packed performances August 27, 28, & 29!  West Yellowstone's own Mark Phillips was the Champion Bull Rider for the second year in a row while Jill Georgio barely aced out Rusti Morgal for the Year End Buckle in the Barrel Race.  Both Jill and Rusti rode their horses with determination throughout the summer months while making spectacular barrel runs that had the folks in the stands on the edge of their seats.  Matt Lodahl, with a barely healed hand
got on the Bareback horse of the Year, Kiowa Kiley, on Saturday night to maintain his lead over Wild Wes Saul in the Bareback Riding.  By placing 2nd in the Bareback Riding for the weekend, Matt, wound up tied with Bobbe McMillan, winner of the Breakaway Roping Year End Buckle, for the All-Around Championship. The co-winners of the All-Around also split the $500 added money provided by Wild West Pizzeria & Saloon, which also hosted the awards after the rodeo Saturday night.  A special thank you from the Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo goes out to all the sponsors for 2009 and the community of West Yellowstone for its support.
